Wind and harsh cold air suck moisture out of your hair, and cause tangles dryness accelerates frizz, breakage, and split ends, and the shock of extreme temperature changes puts additional stress on your hair. It's the time of the year where the weather reminds us of that horrible feeling when you take off your hat and hear static and hair strands snapping, or when you style your hair all morning and open the door to find that it’s snowing. If this weren’t enough, hats, scarves, and sweaters are made from material that insulates heat, keeping your body warm- but they pull and snag on your hair, breaking strands left and right.

Taking care of your hair is the best way to retain length, here's a few tips for the day

A moisturising deep conditioner : most important tip is that you can never deep condition too much! Deep conditioners give your hair exactly what it needs during the winter, penetrating every strand with moisture and nutrients.

Steam : One of the easiest ways to treat your hair to steam therapy. It is just warm, airborne water particles, which can easily penetrate and hydrate your hair strands. You can take a warm shower and ditch the shower cap. Just make sure you don’t leave the house with wet hair!

A rich, creamy leave-in conditioner and moisturiser : When the atmosphere loses humidity, water molecules are sucked out of the hair by osmosis leaving the hair shaft thinner, drier and prone to static. LCO is one of my favourite methods, it refers to three forms of products, and the order in which they should be layered onto the hair for maximum moisture retention: Liquid (water), Cream (something as thin as leave-in conditioner or as thick as a styling cream), and Oil (a hair oil that seals all the moisture in, much like face oils do in skin care).

You can switch up the order or drop a letter altogether depending on how dry, damaged, thin, or thick your hair is. For example, some greatly prefer the LOC method, where the “L” stands for “leave-in conditioner” and the style is sealed with a styling cream.

Cute satin-lined beanie or winter hat: Satin doesn’t absorb moisture or create as much friction as other fabrics like cotton do, so your hair truly stays protected and smooth while it’s covered up.

A go-to protective style: Take advantage of the extra time spent holed up indoors as we are in a lockdown to fall into a YouTube black hole of videos about curly hairstyles. Now is the time to get at least averagely good at braiding and twisting your hair into something that’s tangle-free and fun.
